Seven Itineraries Under Art and Culture

Metaponto is the ideal starting point for the discovery of places and cultural traditions that offer signs of a culture unique in the world. A culture that has been fed on Greek and Roman art, on the exotic charm of the Arabs, the nobility of the Swabians and many other artistic and historical influences.

  • Matera, the town of Sassi

Matera, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993 and European Capital of Culture for 2019, has been defined one of its kind worldwide for its dissimilar configuration and landscapes.

The town is associated especially with the Sassi (‘Rocks'), rock settlements developed in the early Middle Ages along the steep tufa walls of Gravina stream. Benedictine and Greek monks populated the caves, already known by prehistoric men. Subsequently it turned into a peasants' village. The settlement occupied two natural amphitheatres: the Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano, separated by a spur on which stands the Cathedral.

Before the conditions of excessive urbanization would force people to move out, in 1952, the Sassi represented a complex example of integration under man and nature, with technical solutions and innovative urban that nowadays, after urban recovery planning, it is possible to enjoy again in all their splendor. The Sassi will astonish you for the abundance of churches, palaces, buildings carved into the rock and terraces serving as roofs for the buildings below.

The afternoon tour will end with a dinner in a typical restaurant made in caves in a peerless place.
